Things I wish I knew before I started sewing

Already two years had passed since I bought my sewing machine! So I decided to share with you a list of ten things that I wish I knew before I started sewing. It might not be so interesting for those of you who already know how to sew, but for all the beginners it might be useful :-)

When I started sewing, I really didn't know anything (yes, literally anything) about sewing and sewing machines. Over the last two years I've been sewing regularly, but not on a daily basis. You know, lack of time, sometimes lack of inspiration. But I made some clothes that I love wearing, sew loads of little bags and home decor, you know, like covers for armchairs or curtains. I don't even count a number of pillowcases that I made, or the clothes that I was able to alter thanks to my sewing machine. So yes, a lot can happen in two years of time!

Okay, but what are the things I wish I knew before I started to sew?

Zresztą, lepiej w ogóle masowo fastrygować i prasować.

Najpierw będzie Was to irytować, potem się przyzwyczaicie. Nie ma innej rady :-)

1. If the description says that you should make the tacking stitch or that you have to use your iron, just do it. No, it's not just a waste of time.

2. When you're sewing, little pieces of thread are everywhere in the house!

3. Sewing can be a real addiction. When I'm not sewing, I'm thinking about my future projects, searching for right textiles or reading blogs about sewing.

4. Most of the problems with the sewing machine is not the fault of the machine itself. There are so many things to set up correctly (you know, to choose the right needle for the right textile, the thread tension, and so on), that usually when the machine doesn't want to cooperate it's just because you made a mistake. You just have to be patient and try until it works just fine. Online tutorials or the sewing machine's manual can be helpful too :-)

5. The sewing instructions from "Burda" are not as evil as you might think. For a long time I just simply couldn't understand them, but in fact I just needed time to learn all the "sewing slang". The fun thing is that I have much less problems with understanding "Burda" in its French version.

6. Even if you don't have a good 3D imagination, you can sew nice things. Personally, I have no 3D imagination and it sometimes takes me ages to understand how to assemble some pieces, but at the end of the day everything works just fine.

7. Even if you're proud of your first creations, you can be sure that few weeks/months later you'll find them awful. That's completely normal! Since you'll keep progressing, your recent works will always be far better than your first creations.

8. W szyciu najmniej jest… szycia. Najwięcej jest rozgryzania instrukcji, kopiowania wykroju, wycinania elementów, prasowania, fastrygowania… a potem kilka minut zabawy z maszyną i znowu trzeba fastrygować i prasować.

8. When you sew, the "sewing part" is the quickest one. Most of the time you'll spend your time copying your patterns, cutting the textile, tack stitching, ironing… then, just few minutes of using your sewing machine and you'll have to iron again. I find it quite disappointing, since my favorite part is when I can use my sewing machine.

9. You shouldn't trust all the online tutorials that you find. Some of them just don't work the way they should. After a while, it will be easier for you to see at first glance if something can work well or not at all.

10. The most important: sewing is fantastic! It's such a great hobby and the pride of wearing your creations is priceless! Personally I also became far more patient thanks to sewing :-)

Okay, that's all for now! As always, I will keep sharing with you my sewing adventures here, on my blog :-) Tell me, what are the things that surprised you when you started to learn to sew? What kind of advice you could give to a sewing beginner? Hugs! :-)

No i dlatego maszyna stoi nie naprawiona:))
    Buziole Martusiu!!!
